Rural Access to Weight Loss Care: The Geography Problem Telehealth Is Solving

Obesity in America has a zip code problem. According to the CDC’s landmark analysis of Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data, obesity prevalence among adults in nonmetropolitan counties reached 34.2 percent, compared with 28.7 percent in metropolitan counties, a gap that held across nearly every region of the country. More recent survey work suggests the divide has widened rather than closed: a NORC white paper on adult obesity in rural America found that 48 percent of adults in non-metro areas were living with obesity, versus 41 percent in metro areas. The people with the greatest need for structured weight loss care, in other words, are concentrated in exactly the places where that care is hardest to find.

For decades, the response to this mismatch was a shrug. Rural residents drove hours to see specialists, waited months for appointments, or simply went without. What has changed is not the geography but the delivery model.
